Radar-based bird and bat monitoring
Radar detection and tracking of bird and bat activity from DeTect, with the system around it built, installed and supported by WISE Group.
Radar scans a defined volume of airspace and tracks what moves through it: range, altitude and heading, day and night, through rain and fog. Where a consent condition asks what is flying through a site and where, radar is what covers the volume.
WISE Group works with DeTect, Inc., whose MERLIN radar was developed to track small biological targets. We supply and support everything that detection needs in order to keep working where it is installed.
What it produces
Tracks, not pictures
Radar produces tracks: where a target was, how high, how fast and on what heading. DeTect’s platform processes that into collision-risk assessment and reporting, and combines it with camera and acoustic sensors where those are fitted.
Through darkness and weather
Because radar does not depend on light, the record continues through darkness and through weather that stops optical detection.

Operation
Telemetry in Orbalux
Telemetry from the deployed systems is integrated into Orbalux, WISE Group’s own platform, so the installation is monitored alongside the rest of the asset’s monitoring. The detection platform stays with DeTect.
Where cameras fit
Radar covers a volume of airspace and tracks movement through it. Cameras identify what is in frame, and classify it to species where the platform can. The two answer different halves of the same question, and some consent conditions are best met by using both.
